Abstract

In the present work, an attempt has been made to investigate the effects of process parameters such as spindle speed, feed rate, drill diameter and point angle on surface roughness in drilling of the bi-directional carbon fiber reinforced polymer (BD-CFRP) composite using high speed steel (HSS) drills. Taguchi L27 orthogonal array, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the response surface of methodology (RSM) are employed to analyze the effects of drilling parameters on surface roughness(Ra). The study shows that the increase in drill diameter and the spindle speed increases the surface roughness and no clear effect is noticed for point angle in drilling of BD-CFRP composite. It is evident from the study that the tool feed rate has very little influence on the surface roughness. The investigation reveals that the experimental and the predicted values of surface roughness are in good agreement.
